RFID in sporting goods total visibility and efficiency in the era of mixed materials

The sporting goods sector is undergoing a transformation driven by innovation, sustainability, and consumer expectations for speed and personalization. This evolution brings new challenges, particularly the widespread use of mixed materials in products. From advanced fabrics to composite structures, these combinations complicate identification, inventory control, and traceability. Traditional methods fail to deliver the accuracy and efficiency required in today’s competitive environment. RFID technology is the answer, and at Clustag, we’ve developed solutions that not only overcome these obstacles but also deliver unmatched visibility and operational excellence. Keep reading to learn how we make this possible and why it matters for your business.

The growing complexity of RFID in sporting goods

Sporting goods are no longer simple products. They are engineered for performance, sustainability, and style, often combining multiple materials in a single item. While this enhances functionality, it creates significant challenges for supply chain management.

Why mixed materials complicate RFID in sporting goods?

Items such as running shoes, ski boots, or tennis rackets often include textiles, rubber, metal, and carbon fiber. These materials can interfere with RFID signal propagation, reducing read accuracy and reliability. For brands managing thousands of SKUs across global networks, this is a critical issue.

    Sustainability and compliance pressures

Consumers demand transparency, and regulators enforce strict sustainability standards. Mixed materials complicate recycling and require precise traceability to validate eco-friendly claims. Without accurate data, brands risk reputational damage and compliance failures.

    Operational inefficiencies

Inventory counts become error-prone when identification is unreliable. Stock discrepancies lead to delayed replenishment, missed sales, and dissatisfied customers. In an industry where seasonal demand spikes are common, these inefficiencies can severely impact profitability.

How does Clustag overcome the problem of mixed materials?

At Clustag, we’ve invested years of research and development to create RFID solutions that adapt to the complexity of mixed materials without compromising performance.

    Advanced tag engineering

Our RFID tags are designed to maintain optimal performance even when attached to products with challenging compositions. We use innovative antenna structures and RFID Shield Technology that ensure signal integrity across diverse material combinations.

    Smart encoding and data management

Hardware alone isn’t enough. Our software ecosystem enables precise encoding and real-time data synchronization, ensuring every item is accurately tracked from production to point of sale. This integration eliminates blind spots and empowers brands with actionable insights.

    Rigorous testing and validation

We conduct extensive testing in simulated retail and warehouse environments to validate read rates, tag durability, and overall system performance, even under demanding conditions. In addition, our Customer Experience Center allows brands to test their own products, including mixed‑material items, in real operational scenarios. This dedicated space enables us to replicate real workflows, fine‑tune configurations, and ensure every RFID solution meets the highest reliability standards before deployment.

Practical benefits for sporting goods brands

Implementing Clustag RFID solutions delivers measurable advantages across the entire value chain.

    Total Inventory visibility

Accurate item-level tracking eliminates stock discrepancies and optimizes replenishment cycles. Brands can respond faster to demand fluctuations, reduce safety stock, and improve customer satisfaction.

    Enhanced sustainability reporting

Our technology supports transparent reporting on material origins and recycling pathways. This helps brands meet sustainability commitments, comply with regulations, and build consumer trust through verifiable data.

    Scalability and flexibility

Whether managing a global supply chain or a specialized product line, our solutions scale effortlessly. They adapt to diverse operational needs, from high-volume distribution centers to boutique retail environments.

    Beyond visibility driving operational excellence

RFID is more than a tracking tool; it’s a catalyst for operational transformation. By integrating RFID with advanced analytics, brands can unlock predictive insights, optimize labor allocation, and streamline returns management. For sporting goods retailers, this means fewer lost sales, faster omnichannel fulfillment, and a superior customer experience.

    Supporting omnichannel strategies

Consumers expect seamless shopping experiences across physical and digital channels. RFID enables real-time inventory accuracy, making services like buy-online-pick-up-in-store (BOPIS) and same-day delivery achievable without costly errors.

    Reducing shrinkage and loss

Sporting goods stores often carry high-value items vulnerable to theft. RFID provides an additional layer of security by enabling real-time monitoring and automated alerts, reducing shrinkage and protecting margins.

  • Exotec selects Clustag for item-level RFID tunnel solutions

Exotec selects Clustag for item-level RFID tunnel solutions

New project to be deployed in the Netherlands for a world-renowned fashion brand

Exotec appointed Clustag as a strategic partner to deploy item-level RFID tunnel solutions in selected Skypod System projects. Clustag will deploy this technology in the Netherlands for a globally known fashion brand.

Exotec, headquartered in Lille, France, combines hardware and software to deliver advanced warehouse robotics. As a result, the company helps customers improve efficiency, build resiliency, and create better working conditions for warehouse operators.

The Skypod system: smarter warehouse automation

The Skypod System is an order-picking solution for retail, e-commerce, and industry. Robots can climb racks up to 12 metres. They retrieve products autonomously, and deliver totes to human-staffed or automatic picking stations.

Moreover, Exotec systems use vertical storage efficiently without losing performance or flexibility. The Skypod System is fully scalable. Therefore, warehouse can increase storage and picking performance whenb needed.

In addition, the system runs continuously throughout the year with no performance loss. More robots can be added quickly to handle peak periods. Furthermore, Exotec’s software simplifies the management of the entire system.

“We selected the Clustag RFID Tunnel Solutions because we were impressed by its elegant design, proven reliability, and the ability to be delivered quickly by highly competent teams. It perfectly meets our quality and customer satisfaction requirements”, said Chloé Marechal, Supply Chain Manager Western Europe at Exotec.

MOT RFID Tunnel Station to deploy item-level RFID technology

As part of the partnership, Clustag will provide Exotec with its patented RFID MOT Station technology. The MOT Station, Clustag’s flagship RFID tunnel solution, offers reliability and provides flow data to users.

Moreover, this technology integrates smoothly into warehouse processes. It aggregates three key data points during operation: RFID identification, case volume, and case weight. As a result, companies can improve accuracy and streamline the inventory management process.

The MOT Station can scan cases with dimensions up to 850 x 650 x 650 millimetres. It reads up to 400 tags per case at speeds up to 1,000 cases per hour. The item-level RFID tunnel solution is UL certified and CE-marked. Used within the fashion industry.

Within the fashion industry, the MOT Station combined with Clustag’s ZENTUP middleware enables retailers to keep pace with fast-moving fashion cycles. Once items are scanned using RAIN RFID, ZENTUP provides retailers with complete product data. This includes product types, colours, and sizes. Consequently, retailers gain the insight needed to make high-quality stock decision-making, quickly.

ZENTUP will integrate with Exotec’s Warehouse Execution System to provide users with accurate, real-time data. This creates the base that helps retailers deliver orders quickly and efficiently for customers.

In the words of Manolo Reguart, Director of Strategy and Business Development at Clustag: “RFID technology plays a pivotal role in creating enhanced inventory accuracy within the warehouse. The successful integration of our RFID tunnel solutions into some Exotec’s projects will deliver unparalleled inventory visibility for end users”.

With the implementation of item-level RFID and Clustag technology in Exotec’s warehouse solution, smarter supply chain and order fulfilment decisions can be made that improve sales opportunities and the long-term business success of both brands.
